Work From Home: 10 Trusted Places to Find Remote Jobs for Free

6

I currently work at one of the largest Gaming/BPO organisations in the world as a Recruiter and I do it from my apartment in Lagos, Nigeria.

In this post, I will cover the 10 places I know (and trust) you can find remote jobs in. These websites do not require you to pay a dime to apply for the remote jobs listed on their platform and you’re sometimes not even required to submit a CV – Yup, I hated CVs too. But most of them would want to see your experience and you would be applying to different companies with different needs so I would recommend you have the following:

  1. A CV and/or Resume: I don’t know the difference between the two and I don’t care. They usually won’t ask for both at the same time. Just have a decent CV or Resume or something like that.
  2. LinkedIn: You should have a LinkedIn profile. Put your experience, courses, trainings and places you’ve contributed/volunteered in there. Do it shamelessly!
  3. Cover Letter (mostly optional): Most companies do not ask for this but just have it. A cover letter is a document sent with your resume to provide additional information on your skills and experience. The letter provides detailed information on why you are qualified for the job you are applying for. It sometimes accompanies each resume you send out.
  4. GitHub URL: If you’re a developer. They might want to check out the projects you have worked on in the past and also see if you’re good at using version control and all that stuff.
  5. Website or Portfolio (optional): Sometimes, employers want to see your past work before they hire you. Even if you don’t code, you should have a dedicated page, website, channel or document on the web where all your past works can be seen. Coders put their works on GitHub, Designers put their works on Behance or dribble, Photographers put their works on Instagram, Creators put their works on Youtube… etc. I do a lot of things so I designed this website and put my works in it.

NOTE: You do not need to have a degree or be a graduate to set these things up or apply for a job. A company that hires Customer Support Agents will most likely care about your Empathy and Experience than your level of Education.

Also, it’s a remote job. You would not cry all the way home if they say “No” to you… you’d most likely be at home to cry comfortably. It took a while to get my current remote job. I used to apply for 2 jobs a day, 5 days a week. I have a job now but I was still getting rejection emails as at last week because I applied to so many companies. I can’t even remember some of them. Most of these companies will not even get back to you at all, so don’t worry, its normal. Just keep applying for roles you’re interested in until you get the job you really want.

Here are 10 places (or websites) you can find remote jobs in for free:

1. We Work Remotely

This website is also known as WWR and it is very popular in the remote jobs community. WWR also has a Slack channel where you can meet other remote workers, Job seekers and employers who are looking to hire talents. I made a friend here as well. She had posted something about reviewing CVs for free and I reached out. She reviewed my CV and gave me a call on Skype to offer some advice. All of that for free. You will find all kinds of jobs on WWR, so be sure to look around. You can visit WeWorkRemotely.com to get started or join their Slack channel by clicking here.

2. Remotive

Remotive helps you get remote jobs and they are family-friendly. That is, they list companies that let you make time for your family, especially if you have kids. Their mission is basically to help professionals go remote. You can check for jobs on Remotive by visiting Remotive.io.

3. Indeed

Indeed helps you find jobs around you and sends job offers to your email once you sign up for free and upload your resume. If you’re in Nigeria, visit ng.indeed.com to get started. If you’re elsewhere then visit indeed.com. Indeed is also a comprehensive search engine for jobs, so you can spend some time there applying for jobs that interest you.

4. Linkedin

You probably hate that place or don’t know you can find remote jobs on LinkedIn but you can. Just make sure to enter “Remote” as your location on the job search page. See a sample screenshot below
LinkedIn Remote Job Search

Bonus tip: LinkedIn is a great place to search and connect with Recruiters in order to find the perfect job. You can use an email finder tool extension on top of LinkedIn to quickly gather information about the recruiter’s email and send a message directly. This can be an efficient way to get your resume in front of the right person and increase your chances of getting hired.

5. Angel.co

You can also find remote jobs on Angel.co. You do this by clicking on Jobs and choosing “Remote only” or companies that are not completely remote but are open to allowing employees to work from home. An Indian company was going to hire me from here but I wasn’t really fit for the role they were looking for – a travel writer. I am not a travel writer.

6. Remote Ok

This website is similar to Remotive. You can check it out by visiting Remoteok.io

7. Remotely People

You can find the highest-paid remote jobs in tech on remotelypeople.com

8. Stackoverflow

Dev jobs, mostly. And you will find companies who are willing to assist with Visa Sponsorship and relocation here. Visit stackoverflow.com/jobs to get started.

9. Remote.com

Remote jobs for anyone, anywhere. Visit Remote.com to get started

10 Golance

Golance is just like Fiver, Upwork, Freelancer, Guru, etc. but it is better because your bidding limit is UNLIMITED, membership is FREE, Processing Fee is 0%, and they only charge 7.95% as freelance fee. It’s basically like other Freelance platforms but cheaper and more flexible. You can choose to get paid via wire transfer, Paypal or Payoneer. I use Payoneer because it’s the best option for Nigerians, in my opinion.

11. Crossover

Cross over’s mission is to connect the most talented professionals in the world with unprecedented access to high-impact, high-paying roles. They are offering over 40 different job positions in Engineering, Product Management, Support, Finance, Marketing, Sales, and Operations with compensations ranging from $10k to $1M USD/year.

12. Visa Jobs HQ

Visa Jobs HQ’s platforms and resources make it easy for employers all over the globe to source talents in Africa – From the streets of Lagos to Nairobi, Accra, Johannesburg, millions of talented and highly-skilled young people innovate in tech, science, engineering, finance and management. The network singlehandedly accounts for the highest number of international job placement on the African continent annually.

13. Check your favourite companies/Cold Email

Another thing I have done in the past was to visit the websites of companies I love and find out if they are hiring. You can also shoot them a cold email, introduce yourself and ask them if they are hiring. They can only say “No” or Ignore you, it cannot be worse than that. So, try that as well!

UPDATE: I ADDED SOME MORE PLATFORMS IN THIS VIDEO

So that’s it. My list of trusted places you can find remote jobs in. If you know more and would like to contribute to this article, please leave your comments below and I will add your mention to the list. And don’t forget to shoot me a mail when you get that job. All the best!

Nicklas Hallen and I Discussed OkadaBooks and Digital Publishing in Nigeria

6

I was in an interview with Nicklas Hallen a few months ago. It’s out now on ESA – Volume 61, Issue 2

Manoeuvring Through the Traffic Jam: A Conversation With Magnus Okeke About OkadaBooks and Digital Publishing in Nigeria.

You can read it here

This work was supported by The Swedish Research Council

Intro to ETF in Investing and Some Nigerian ETFs

The video is an introduction to Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs), also known as exchange funds, led by Magnus Okeke. The presenter defines an ETF as an exchange-traded fund that can be thought of as a basket of different investments. ETFs trade like a stock, meaning they are listed in a market and you can buy them on a stock trading platform.

Contents and History of ETFs:

  • An ETF’s basket can contain stocks, gold, Bitcoin, bonds, or a combination of these.
  • If you buy one ETF, you gain access to many assets inside that basket.
  • The concept of an ETF reportedly originated from a physicist, not a financial professional.
  • ETFs have been around since the 1990s.
  • They gained popularity due to low cost and diversification, as people wanted to pay for one thing and get exposure to multiple things.
  • An ETF is similar to an index, where an index is a name given to two or more things grouped together. For example, the S&P 500 index is the same as the S&P 500 ETF, as both index the top 500 companies in the US.

Issuers and Trading:

  • ETFs are created by investment firms, fund managers, asset managers, and sponsors.
  • Common global ETF issuers include BlackRock, Vanguard, State Street (SPDR), Invesco, Fidelity, and Charles Schwab.
  • After being issued, exchanges list the ETFs for people to buy. Stock exchanges act as a marketplace for trading, but they do not issue the ETFs.
  • Examples of exchanges include the New York Stock Exchange, NASDAQ (which list US ETFs), and the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) (which lists Nigerian ETFs).

ETFs vs. Stocks:

  • A stock represents one company, while an ETF is a basket containing one or more companies.
  • ETFs reduce risk through diversification because fund managers can remove an underperforming stock from the basket and replace it with one that is doing well.
  • Stocks depend on a single business, so if that company does poorly, the investment will not grow.
  • ETFs have lower management costs and are easier to buy and sell due to huge liquidity and volume.
  • ETFs are ideal for beginners and long-term investors because they are generally safer compared to stocks.
  • Some argue that individual stocks can outperform an ETF if the company does “insanely well”, but in that case, you lose the safety provided by an ETF.

Types of ETFs and Popular Examples:

  • Popular US ETFs include SPY (tracks the S&P 500), VOO (tracks the S&P 500 with low cost), QQQ (technology-focused), VTI (total US market), and EVV (large-cap exposure).
  • US ETFs are popular globally due to high liquidity and volume.
  • Top Nigerian ETFs by popularity and liquidity include New Gold (gold exposure) and Lotus Halal. Nigerian ETFs offer simple market access, diversification into different sectors, and the ability to buy a gold ETF to hedge against inflation.
  • There are also Bitcoin ETFs (like HUDO, BITB, and I-Betas), which give exposure to Bitcoin. If you don’t want to buy Bitcoin directly, you can buy these ETFs.
  • Other types of ETFs include Gold ETFs and AI and robotics ETFs (such as ARTY, the iShares Future AI and Tech ETF).

Intro to Stock Investing 2026 | Learn to Invest in Stocks for FREE

0

The speaker, Magnus Okeke, began the video, which was titled “Intro to Stock Investing,” by welcoming attendees.

The presentation covers six main questions:

  • What stocks are.
  • Why companies go public.
  • Why people buy stocks.
  • How to buy stocks.
  • What to look out for.
  • The platforms that can be used to buy stocks.

The speaker, Magnus Okeke, identified himself as a recruiter with a nine-to-five job who also invests in stocks on the side. He is “a huge, huge fan of privacy” and reassured the audience that he would not ask for their location or send DMs asking for money.

What Stocks Are and Why Companies Go Public

The speaker started investing in stocks during the pandemic after taking courses in various subjects, including customer support and product management, and attempting to learn forex trading in 2017.

Stock investing can be thought of as “buying a slice of a company”. Companies are typically publicly listed, and if you want to confirm if a company is worth investing in, you should check if it’s publicly listed. The speaker gave the analogy of a six-slice pizza, where a company may keep three slices for themselves and offer the other three to the public for investment or purchase.

Companies go public for several reasons, primarily to get investors’ money because they need to grow and are not thieves. When a company wants to go public, they usually conduct an Initial Public Offering (IPO). An IPO is when a company announces they are “no longer a private company” and will publicly declare their earnings and losses so investors can see their numbers. The most popular way to list a stock is through an IPO, although other methods exist.

The speaker explained that the founders and early owners of a company retain most of the shares, so when new people buy the stock, the price goes up, which benefits the original owners. Mark Zuckerberg, for example, owns the most Meta shares “by a significant margin”.

To successfully take a company public, a “very, very good team” is needed. The speaker used Canva as an example, mentioning they hired Kelly Steleberg, who had previously worked with Zoom and other companies, to review their numbers before their rumored IPO. Going public also opens doors for partnerships and allows the company to gain access to things a private company would not.

How to Buy Stocks and Platforms to Use

To buy shares, an investor needs to find a broker. While stockbrokers in suits still exist, modern investing often uses brokerage platforms. Investors no longer need to physically give money to an individual to buy stocks for them; they can now do it from home.

Examples of brokerage platforms mentioned include:

  • Trove (for Nigeria).
  • Weebull (for the US and Australia).
  • Trading 212 (for the UK).
  • Bamboo.
  • Chaka.

A significant development in modern investing is the ability to buy fractional shares, meaning investors can buy a small fraction of a share for a lower amount, such as 5,000 or 10,000 Naira.

The stock market is open Monday to Friday. For the US market, it typically opens at 3:30 p.m. and closes around 10:00 p.m. Nigerian time. The Nigerian stock market opens at 9:30 a.m. and closes at 2:30 p.m..

Stock markets are governed by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The SEC makes the rules for how stocks are traded and invested. The Nigerian SEC website is sec.gov.ng.

What to Look Out For

The speaker recommends using Yahoo Finance to analyze stocks, mentioning he has used it every day for the past two years.

The key metrics to check when analyzing a stock are:

  • Market Cap: Long-term investors should favor stocks with a “huge market cap” because it suggests dominance and stability. Small companies with low caps can be volatile.
  • PE Ratio (Price to Earnings Ratio): This is calculated by dividing the price of the stock by the earnings per share (EPS). It gives an investor a sense of the premium they are paying for the stock. A high PE ratio is not good; a “lower PE ratio is always better”.
  • Financials (Balance Sheet): Investors should examine a company’s balance sheet to see its numbers and debt. Excessive debt (e.g., 100 million or 200 million) is a red flag.
  • Analysis (Earnings and Revenue): A company’s earnings should be consistently met (indicated by a green display on the chart). This section also shows how many analysts rate the stock as a “buy,” “hold,” or “sell”.
  • Company Profile: This is public information and includes the CEO’s name, salary, birth year, the company’s sector, industry, and number of employees.
  • SEC Filings: Public companies must file forms like the 10Q (periodic financial report) and 8K (corporate changes and voting matters) with the SEC, which is also publicly accessible.

The speaker also advised investors to “never invest in any company [they] don’t know what they do”.

Investment Advice

In the event of a financial crisis, the speaker advises investors to:

  • Don’t overinvest: Only invest a comfortable percentage of your income (e.g., 10%, 20%, or 30%), never a huge chunk of your salary or allowance.
  • Diversify: Invest across different sectors (e.g., tech, robotics, healthcare) so that a drop in one sector does not wipe out your entire portfolio.

Regarding debt, the speaker advised against any debt that an individual cannot pay back.

Cribstock is like PiggyVest and Bamboo, but for Real Estate

0

Cribstock is solving a challenging problem faced by over 250 million Africans. The average real estate ownership age in Africa starts at 45. Through fractional ownership of properties more younger people can own real estate and enjoy similar benefits of a landlord.

What is Cribstock?

Cribstock is a platform that lets you invest in real estate properties. You visit the platform, find a property you like, check the number of units you can buy and the returns… Then invest in the property. It’s like buying a farm with PiggyVest if you remember doing that a few years back.

The platform lets you co-own properties and earn rent every month from happy tenants.

Is Cribstock free?

Yes. It is 100% free to use. To invest in a property, you have to fund your wallet first. They charge a withdrawal fee when you want to withdraw your money. I was charged 45 Naira when I did a test withdrawal. You can register for free by clicking here.

Is Cribstock a Scam?

No. It is not a scam. I deposited some money in July and invested in a property, then sold my shares back to the market and withdrew the money + interests, in August. I was basically testing it for this post.

Cribstock Founders

How do I withdraw my money from Cribstock?

So, this is why I said Cribstock is like Bamboo and PiggyVest. You need to sell your investment and profits back to the market to cash out. It’s as easy as that. So, let’s do the math with small money… If you invested ₦11,000, at 26% interest per month, you will make a total of ₦13, 860 after 1 month. If you want to withdraw your money, simply sell the 13,860 back to the market and withdraw your money.

How do I get Started with Cribstock?

You can register for free by clicking here. They have an FAQ page here. The FAQ page covers all other questions you might have. Click here to check it out

Are the Investments in Nigeria too?

Yes. The properties are in Nigeria and you will see their locations on the platform

Update:
I received comments on TikTok that it was a scam. I reached out to the CEO for clarification and he gave me details about the business

45+ Health Insurance Companies in Nigeria and Why You Need One

0

In my opinion, getting Health Insurance is one of the best gifts you can get yourself, and if possible for your family and employees. It’s not expensive and a basic health insurance plan will cover your medical checkups, treatments and consultations.

Why is a Health Insurance so Important?

You don’t have to pay a dime if you’re rushed to the hospital or if you need to run tests. if the situation costs hundreds of thousands, you’ll be required to pay less because you have Health Insurance.

Some modern health insurance companies (HMOs) have apps that let you consult doctors without going to the hospital.

What to Look Out For When Choosing A Health Plan

Here’s a list of things you need to look out for when choosing a health care plan;

Ensure that you look for insurers that offer a personal experience;

Due to the fact that there are too many stories of insurance companies that offer impersonal and unhelpful information to their customers, while you are in search of the right health insurance company, it is advisable to go for insurers who fall more on the side of offering a personalized experience for their members/customers.

Choose plans that help with saving costs;

A large number of employees would be looking out for cost-reducing insurance plans so they do not feel too indebted or like a burden as opposed to something way out of budget. So it is advisable to get an Exclusive Provider Organization (EPO) plan. That way, your employees will have access to several high-quality providers without having to seek referrals before gaining access to specialists or having to go through a long route.

Give the employees a proper education on how to select a well-put out and efficient health care plan;

You should also note that your employees may be new to this and it may be your duty to direct them towards the right path, push them towards getting information from the right people outside your company of choice, and ask the broker from your insurance company for educative materials that could be shared among your employees to make their research faster, that’ll help widen the mindsets of your employees as to what plan suits or benefits them more.

This would also help prevent any causes for complaint in the future and also help save costs.

Offer plans that provide tech-supported health care options;

Technology is now a big part of health insurance, several health insurance companies provide access to their information, with sites to book appointments and all-around help with health care services.

This would assist your employees in actively catering for any medical issues they may have, it’ll push them into seeing the doctor at a quicker pace and also help you save money.

Communicate;

It is essential to communicate to your employees the health care plan options they have and to always keep them informed about any deadline they may have for enrollment into the health care plans. It is also necessary that you make available support for them and also be ready to answer any of their questions while they are signing up. This is crucial to avoid issues for yourself in the near future.
